Bruges -- Jan Breydel Stadium Posted: Sunday June 04, 2000 05:57 PM
The 25-year-old Jan Breydel Stadium located in Belgium plays host to Bruges' two professional club sides, Club Bruges KV and Cercle Bruges KSV. As with a number of the match venues for the European Championship tournament in the Netherlands and Belgium, the stadium has undergone extensive renovations in recent years. Capacity at the Belgian ground was expanded from a modest 18,000 to approximately 30,000.
World champion France will provide the entertainment during the first phase, as it prepares to lock horns with Denmark and the Czech Republic. The stadium was previously named the Olympiastadion, but was renamed Jan Breydel after a famous 14th century rebel leader from Flanders. He is best known for beating the French. BrugesAn ancient and picturesque city in the northwest of Belgium, Bruges is justifiably revered as one of Europe's most enticing cities. It earns its tag as "The Venice of the North" from its meandering canals and winding streets -- a nickname it shares with Dutch neighbor Amsterdam. With an abundance of attractive architecture, cobbled streets and the bustling Market Square, Bruges will form a picturesque backdrop for the Euro 2000 carnival. The charming medieval city is one of Belgium's most popular tourist attractions with the lure of a rich cultural heritage and delightful canal cruises. It is arguably the best-preserved medieval city in Europe. Its sculpted facades and winding alleys can give visitors the feeling of traveling back in time.
