Charleroi -- Stade Communal Posted: Sunday June 04, 2000 04:57 PM
The Stade Communal has benefited from an extensive renovation and now holds 30,000 supporters after the construction of three new stands. Royal Charleroi plays its home fixtures here, but the summer hype will center around the highly anticipated clash between old rivals Germany and England. The English -- and the accompanying fears of English hooligans -- return three days later to take on Romania. The stadium has been home to the Charleroi SC club for almost a century.
At the end of the championship, a part of the top tier of the stands was to be lowered, cutting the number of seats by 8,000. The design, especially some of the steep stands, has been criticized as unsafe, especially for the high-profile Germany vs. England tilt. Charleroi:Named after King Charles II, Charleroi is Belgium's youngest city and is based in the French-speaking area of Belgium. It lies 50 miles from Brussels and with a growing transport network, the city's accessibility has been greatly enhanced. Euro 2000 will undoubtedly increase its popularity, particularly given the hospitality for which Charleroi is renowned and a wide selection of museums and churches. After achieving its ambition to become a major city, the summer tournament will no doubt enhance Charleroi's status. Charleroi is among the biggest cities in Wallonia, the country's French-speaking region. Built in the 17th century, the city is surrounded by slagheaps and old industrial sites.
