The Sclessin Stadium has undergone significant renovation to prepare it for the rigors of Euro 2000. Two stands have been added to inflate the capacity to 30,000. When the cream of European football is not flocking to the stadium for summer tournaments, the Sclessin plays host to Royal Standard de Liege. The club bought the land where the stadium sits in the 1920s and has played there for over 90 years. However, in June they will stand aside as six of the Euro 2000 finalists stretch their legs in the Sclessin Stadium, starting with Germany and Romania on 12 June.
The stadium was officially re-inaugurated in March 1999. After an initial construction phase in 1988, two new stands were added in 1993 and 1998. The stands run all the way down to the edge of the pitch in the English style, adding a charge to the atmosphere in the Stade de Sclessin Liege:A rich cultural scene and majestic landscapes characterize the university city of Liege.
