Another blow U.S. captain injured on day World Cup squad namedUpdated: Thursday August 23, 2001 4:57 PM
NEW YORK (AP) -- Already missing half of its top offensive players, the U.S. soccer team got more bad news Wednesday night when its captain, Claudio Reyna, was hurt playing in a European Champions League qualifier. The playmaking midfielder, set to return from a one-game suspension in World Cup play, reinjured a groin while playing for Glasgow Rangers and came out after a first-half foul by Nikola Lazetic. Reyna originally hurt the leg while playing for the United States in a World Cup qualifier against Mexico on Feb. 28 and missed the following month's win at Honduras. He reinjured the groin earlier this month in practice for Glasgow, which was eliminated from the Champions League with Wednesday's 2-1 loss. Reyna's presence in midfield was missed July 1 when he served the suspension during a 1-0 defeat at Mexico, the first loss for the Americans in the final round of qualifying in the North and Central American and Caribbean region. "I don't think you can make any conclusions yet," U.S. coach Bruce Arena said from his home in Virginia. "I think we'll know more in the next couple of days when they can fully understand the tenderness and the range of motion." Heading into qualifiers against Honduras at Washington on Sept. 1 and at Costa Rica on Sept. 5, the U.S. team is short on attacking players following injuries to Clint Mathis (knee surgery), Brian McBride (blood clot in arm), John O'Brien (knee), Ben Olsen (ankle surgery), Ante Razov (strained groin) and Josh Wolff (broken foot). Arena picked three fulltime forwards -- Landon Donovan, Jovan Kirovski and Joe-Max Moore -- in his 24-man roster announced earlier Wednesday and also could move up Cobi Jones or Earnie Stewart, who have played midfield lately for the national team. Donovan, 19, is viewed as a future star but has never played in a World Cup qualifier; Kirovski hasn't played this season for Crystal Palace in England; and Moore was bypassed in Everton's opener last weekend, then played the final 19 minutes of Monday night's 1-1 tie against Tottenham. Brad Friedel and Kasey Keller, the top two U.S. goalkeepers, were both selected. Keller started the last four qualifiers for the United States but didn't get into the first two games of the season with his new team in England, Tottenham Hotspur. Friedel starts for Blackburn Rovers in England but skipped the July 1 qualifier at Mexico after U.S. coach Bruce Arena started Keller the previous two games. Preki Radosavljevic, a 38-year-old midfielder who hasn't played for the national team since the 1998 World Cup, was on the roster. Fourteen of the players are in the MLS, including four from Miami. San Jose midfielder Manny Lagos and Colorado goalkeeper Scott Garlick were invited to national team camp for the first time. The United States (4-1-1) is second in qualifying with 13 points, trailing Costa Rica (4-1-1) on goal difference. Honduras and Jamaica (2-2-2) have eight points each, followed by Mexico (2-3-1) and Trinidad and Tobago (0-5-1). The top three advance to the 32-nation field for next year's tournament in Japan and South Korea.
