Trinidad remains defiant
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (Reuters) -- Trinidad and Tobago have promised to make life tough for both Honduras and the United States in their remaining World Cup qualifiers despite having no chance of qualifying. "We are not going to allow them to run over us simply because we cannot qualify. If they want to win, they are going to have to come good," said the team's technical director Rene Simoes. Trinidad and Tobago, with just one point, meet Honduras in their penultimate CONCACAF zone match at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula, Honduras on Sunday. Costa Rica have already qualified from the six-team play-off for next year's finals. Honduras (14 points), the U.S. and Mexico, with 13 point each, lead the race for the final two berths. Simoes said he would use the game as part of Trinidad and Tobago's preparations for the Gold Cup in January. "I am sure that everyone is getting fed up of us losing so we will take this game very seriously and then wait on the United States in November," said Simoes. Simoes has called up 16-year-old goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, who impressed in the FIFA under-17 World Championship, which ended here on the weekend. He is joined by West Ham's Shaka Hislop as the two goalkeepers in the squad.
