Trinidad forward Trotman dies
Updated: Thursday October 04, 2001 12:27 AM PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) - Mickey Trotman, a forward for Trinidad and Tobago's soccer team, was killed in a car accident along with a brother and two friends Wednesday just hours after arriving from the United States. He was 26. Trotman, who plays for Rochester in the A-League, went directly from the airport Tuesday night to practice with Trinidad's team at Hasley Crawford Stadium, where it is preparing for Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Honduras. After having dinner with the team, he left for his hometown of Arima, in east Trinidad. After he visited his aunt, the car he was driving slammed into a light pole at about 1:45 a.m. EDT Wednesday near his mother's home. Trotman and his brother Stefan were killed instantly, said their mother, Mary Trotman. Friends Troy Hernandez and Tessa Moses died later at a hospital. The other person in the car -- Trotman's brother Kenyon -- was being treated at a hospital for a broken leg. Trotman's biggest goal gave Trinidad a 2-1 victory against Costa Rica in overtime in the quarterfinals of last year's CONCACAF Gold Cup, the championship of soccer's North and Central American and Caribbean region. Trinidad head coach Rene Simoes said Trotman left training camp without permission. "In countries such as the UAE, Brazil, Jamaica and Qatar, we have witnessed the death of talented players," he said. "In all cases, the deaths were attributed to excess speeding, fatigue and a lack of attention. But with that said, Mickey will be missed."
Trotman played 11 games this year for the Rochester Rhinos, who postponed their playoff game against Milwaukee. It had been rescheduled for Wednesday. It was then reset for Thursday night.
