Chile cooked Colombia wins 3-1, keeps World Cup hope aliveUpdated: Wednesday November 07, 2001 7:00 PM
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- Colombia managed to hold on to its chance to advance to the World Cup finals Wednesday, beating Chile 3-1. Colombia has a very slim chance of qualifying directly for the 2002 tournament, but it can still reach the playoff against Oceania champion Australia by finishing in fifth place. Brazil and Uruguay are also fighting to reach the World Cup finals. Midfielder Freddy Grisales scored the first goal in the 19th minute, drawing wild cheers from the sparse crowd in El Campin stadium. A scant 17,000 tickets were sold to the game, though the stadium holds 40,000. Chile equalized in the 38th minute, when striker Jaime Riveros struck from a free kick. Colombia regained the lead in the 66th minute as Aston Villa forward Juan Pablo Angel also netted a free kick. A minute later, fullback Jerson Gonzalez scored the third goal from the far right. Chile spent the rest of the game running out the clock. Chile ended the game with seven men. Victor Cancino was thrown out in the 25th minute after receiving two yellow cards, Moises Villarroel was tossed in the 65th for protesting to the referee, Patricio Ormazabal was ejected in the 81st for hitting Rafael Castillo and Marco Villaseca left in the 89th.
