LUIS MONTI (1901-1983)

Argentina/Italy, Midfielder
World Cup Record: 1930 (Argentina, 2nd), 1934 (Italy, winner)

Monti was a versatile and rugged midfielder who featured in two finals for different countries, a unique achievement in World Cup history.

In 1930, Monti played for his native Argentina and scored in a 1-0 first-round win over France and then got the first in a 6-1 demolition of the United States in the semifinals, which set up Argentina's clash with host and neighbor Uruguay for the inaugural trophy. Argentina grabbed a 2-1 halftime lead, but in the second half the home side proved too strong and claimed a 4-2 victory.

A year after the finals, Monti joined Italian side Juventus, where he won four straight league titles between 1932 and 1935. His performances also earned him a call-up to the Italian squad, a consequence of coach Vittorio Pozzo's policy of tapping the Latin American stars that were being attracted to the Italian league in the days before the rules on international eligibility were tightened up.

Monti's most important contribution came in the host's semifinal against the talented Austrian side, when he rose to the job of man-marking Austrian star Matthias Sindelar with a typically bullying performance. Italy earned a 1-0 win.

In the final against Czechoslovakia, Monti again won the midfield battle against Stefan Cambal and this time emerged as a world champion as Italy won 2-1.
