Russian players get half of payout Posted: Wednesday December 26, 2001 1:00 PM
MOSCOW (Reuters) -- Russian players can make up to 7.5 million Swiss francs (US$4.45 million) in bonuses with a successful showing at next year's World Cup, the country's soccer chief said on Wednesday. "The answer is simple -- the players will get 50 percent of our income during the World Cup," Vyacheslav Koloskov, president of the Russian Football Union (RFU), told a news conference in a country where the average monthly wage is less than $100. "Let's say, if we make 15 million (Swiss francs) by winning the whole thing, the players will get 7.5 million. "We also have a strong backing from our sponsors, so I don't think our players should worry about anything else besides football -- financially, we're in good hands," Koloskov said. On Wednesday, the RFU added South Korean electronics company LG to its list of official team sponsors, which already included such brands as Nike and Coca-Cola. The Russian players shared a $1 million bonus for qualifying for the World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Russian officials also said the country is to host a four-team tournament in Moscow from May 17-19, involving Ukraine, Poland, and Croatia or Turkey, as a final tune-up before the finals. The Russians will also play Ireland in Dublin on Feb. 13, Estonia in Tallinn on March 27 and France in Paris on April 17 as part of their preparations. Russia were drawn in World Cup group H along with co-hosts Japan, Belgium and Tunisia.
