Zurawski double secures Poland win

LIMASSOL, Cyprus (Reuters) -- Maciej Zurawski scored twice to give World Cup-bound Poland a 2-1 victory over the Faroe Islands in a rain-soaked friendly on Sunday.

The Wisla Krakow striker clinically finished a Pawel Kaczorowski cross in the 11th minute for Poland, who fielded a shadow side comprised mostly of domestic club players.

Faroe Islands' Rogvl Jacobsen beat the offside trap in the 25th minute to level the match in one of the only attacks mustered by the North Atlantic side.

Zurawski, the Polish league's leading scorer who is seeking a place in the World Cup squad, added his second from the penalty spot just before halftime. Poland squandered numerous opportunities in the second half.

"Some players performed quite well, but we still have much to do before we are in top form [for the World Cup]," Poland coach Jerzy Engel said.

Poland are expected to field their usual team made up largely of players with foreign clubs, including Panathinaikos striker Emmanuel Olisadebe, in a friendly against Northern Ireland on Wednesday, though Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek is doubtful through injury.

The Poles will face Portugal, South Korea and the United States in the World Cup's group phase.
