France's Zinedine Zidane Posted: Thursday May 23, 2002 1:56 PMUpdated: Thursday May 23, 2002 2:23 PM
By Patrick Snell, CNNSI.com There are very few things in football that the world's most expensive player hasn't won. Two-time FIFA player of the year Zinedine Zidane helped his country win the last World Cup four years ago and then the Euro 2000 championships, not to mention two title successes with Juventus in Italy. Now Real Madrid's Champions League hero is hungry for more success. "When you go on the pitch it's always to win, and with the World Cup, especially so," Zidane said. "France will go to the tournament with the intention of entering the history books." "Zizou" has played in just one World Cup so far -- that the victorious campaign back in '98. After five years with Juve, he joined Spain's most famous club Real Madrid in June 2001 for a record transfer fee of US$55 million. As reigning world champion, Zidane believes France must live up to its billing. "Quite simply, we are very keen to have a good World Cup. We must give our best to ensure we don't end up regretting anything." But the burning question: Can France retain its title? Few would rule it out. World Sport, the sports news show that airs on CNN International, previewed many of the individuals expected to shine at the World Cup.
