ULSAN, South Korea (Reuters) -- Rivaldo struck a penalty three minutes from time to give Brazil a controversial 2-1 win in which two Turkey players were sent off on Monday in their opening World Cup match.

Turkey defender Alpay Ozalan pulled back substitute Luizao as he bore down on goal to concede the penalty on the edge of the 18-metre box and was immediately shown the red card in the 86th minute.

Turkey were incensed by the decision by South Korean referee Kim Young-joo but Rivaldo coolly converted from the spot.

Seconds before the final whistle Hakan Unsal was sent off for kicking the ball at Rivaldo as he prepared to take a corner. The Barcelona player collapsed theatrically clutching his head, although the ball hit his legs.

Ronaldo had earlier scored his first goal in a competitive international for nearly three years to equalize five minutes after halftime.

Turkey, playing at their first World Cup for 48 years, stunned the four-times world champions when Hasan Sas gave them the lead in first half injury time.

Brazil, with Ronaldo showing flashes of the play which made him twice World Player of the Year, dominated the match but were repeatedly denied by Turkish goalkeeper Rustu Recber.

After a lively opening, the first half exploded in the last five minutes as Rustu produced three saves in a row to keep Brazil at bay and Turkey went up the other end and scored.

The Fenerbahce goalkeeper made two saves from Rivaldo -- one a close range header when the Barcelona player seemed certain to score -- and one from Ronaldinho, after he had broken through the defense.

Then, with the last move of the first half, Turkey went upfield, Yildiray Basturk chipped the ball over the Brazil defense and the lively Sas sneaked behind Cafu and whacked the ball left-footed past Marcos.

Rustu miraculously defied Rivaldo and Ronaldo four minutes into the second half but in the next attack, Rivaldo crossed from the left and Ronaldo beat three defenders to the ball to finally beat Rustu.

Shortly afterwards, Ronaldo jigged his way through the defense but Rustu saved again.

Brazil twice appeared set to score in their following attacks but again found Rustu in the way. First, he dived at the feet of Lucio to stop the Bayer Leverkusen player scoring from close range and then he tipped away a drive by Juninho.

Turkey's best second half effort came when Marcos fumbled blistering free kick by Hakan Unsal.

Brazil penalty an injustice, Turkish coach says

A late penalty that cost Turkey a 2-1 World Cup opening match defeat at the hands of Brazil on Monday was an injustice, Turkish coach Senol Gunes said.

"We came here with pride and we played the game with pride...we had a great effort but we couldn't get what we deserved," he told reporters after the group C match.

"There is an injustice in the result, I have to say that, an injustice," he added.

Gunes said his team gave too much away. "In the first half, we played good but we gave away many opportunities to Brazil. In the second half, we tried to control the game and we did so. But again we gave away two goals that we shouldn't have."

Gunes said his side deserved better. "We deserved one point. We didn't get it because of some other reasons which I don't want to mention now. We have two games left. We'll try to get the points to take us to the knockout stage," he added.

He said Turkey had set themselves the target of nine points from three games. "We have six points to get and we're going to get the six points by playing the best we can," he added.

    Silva steps in for Brazil

Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari named inexperienced defensive midfielder Gilberto Silva in place of his injured captain Emerson for their World Cup group C opener against Turkey on Monday.

The 25-year-old Gilberto Silva has played five times for Brazil but only once in a competitive match, and Scolari had been expected to opt for the more experienced Vampeta.

Turkey coach Senol Gunes named four defenders, with Fatih Akyel expected to get forward on the right. The Turkish left flank looked strong, with Hakan Unsal and Hasan Sas both expected to test Brazil's Cafu, who will wear the captain's armband.

Turkey midfielder Okan Buruk was ruled out through injury and Gunes decided to play youngster Emre Belozoglu in support of lone striker Hakan Sukur.
