Cherundolo likely out of World Cup Posted: Tuesday June 11, 2002 6:08 AMSEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- The last spot on the U.S. soccer team is proving to be dangerous to the occupant's health. Defender Steve Cherundolo injured his right knee during practice last weekend and probably will be sidelined for the remainder of the tournament, the Americans said Monday. Cherundolo, who plays for Hannover 96 in Germany, was selected as an alternate when the 23-man U.S. roster was announced April 22. But midfielder Chris Armas tore a knee ligament during a 2-1 win over Uruguay on May 12 and defender Greg Vanney, who was to take Armas' spot, partially tore a knee ligament four days later during a 5-0 victory over Jamaica. The team said Monday that Cherundolo has a deep bone bruise to his right knee. He did not play in the World Cup prior to the injury, but appeared in seven of 10 qualifiers last year.
