BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Aime Anthuenis took over as Belgium's national soccer coach Saturday after three seasons at the country's first division powerhouse Anderlecht.

Anthuenis, 58, replaces Robert Waseige who quit after taking Belgium to the second round of the World Cup finals where the "red devils" lost 2-0 to Brazil.

In his first two seasons at Anderlecht, Anthuenis led the Brussels club to back-to-back championship wins and masterminded a run to the second phase of the Champions League that included wins over Manchester United, Real Madrid and Lazio.

However, the club could only manage third place in the Belgian first division last season.

Hugo Broos will move from first division rival Excelsior Mouscron to replace Anthuenis at Anderlecht.

Anthuenis was preferred as national coach over Eric Gerets, Belgium's former defensive stalwart, who was fired last month by leading Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

After a long playing and coaching career at a succession of Belgian clubs, Anthuenis' breakthrough came in 1999 when he led small, unfancied Racing Genk to its first Belgian league title.

Waseige surprised Belgian soccer fans on the eve of the World Cup when he announced he would step down after the tournament to take over at his old club Standard Liege.
