Reactions Who will win the World Cup final?Posted: Saturday June 29, 2002 6:17 PMCNNSI.com producers Simon Hooper and Jeff Green went Head2Head on who will win the World Cup final, and the following is a selection of user responses: Whether it's Brazil or it's Germany, in the end, the underdogs of this tournament will be the real winners. They have finally shaken up the mighty Europeans. The evidence of this is found in FIFA and former Euro-football greats giving excuses for the success of non-Euro countries like the USA and S. Korea. They are shaking in their boots and blaming fatigue and long tournaments for their cup woes. Many U.S., S. Korean, and Turkish players play in the same leagues as the other Euro nationals. Determination wins matches, not history. 2006 will see a USA and Turkey final!
Whoever wins this match, it will be deserved. Brazil has the most talented players and Germany is a more disciplined group. I don't think both powerhouses came to the final match because of luck. In any case, I pray for the Brazilians' victory, because they play "beautiful." And because the 2006 World Cup is already in Germany's pocket.
Jeff Green is a moron and a traitor to the U.S.A.! Kahn sucks; he's just been lucky playing against a bunch of half-assed teams with no offense. Germany has yet to play a real offensive, aggressive team in the tournament (okay, maybe an understaffed and jet-lagged Ireland). Prediction: THREE GOALS - one for each "R"! bRAH, bRAH, bRAHzil!
Brazil will beat Germany because of all the reasons put forth, plus one more that everyone has forgotten; the Germans were allowed to receive their women, which is a distraction during the World Cup, whereas Brazilians were not.
If the game is really boring, Germany will probably win. If it is really exciting, Brazil will win. Look for the Brazilian attack to produce at least one shot that Kahn has no chance to stop. The question will be how many of those they can make, because if Kahn has a chance at a save, he makes it. And will Marcos come up big when the Brazilian defense has its lapses. My prediction: Brazil wins 2-1, with Kahn making about 5 great saves.
Germany's a good team and they've had a good run but Brazil is clearly the best team in the world right now... This team of Brazilians has been here before and know exactly what not to do, so it's all over for Germany. Ronaldo and the Brazilian attack will be a little too much for the Germans and the ball will be in the Germans half for almost the entire game. Brazil's taking it, 2-0.
Having an Italian ref will gift the
balance on the German side somewhat.
The Italians will never forget the
thrashing the Boys from Brazil gave them
at the 1970 Cup Final and the unlucky
shot by Baggio in the '94 game.
Like American football: The offense sells tickets but the defense wins championships. The Brazilians will have much opportunities to show their samba soccer, but there's also the German wall against em, with Oliver Kahn in front of it. We make it in overtime, cause we know how to fight. You can bet on it.
Germany will win, 2 -1 in extra time on a golden goal by Miroslav Klose. Brazil has a great attack, Germany a great defense. It seems that Brazil has too much firepower, but we must remember, it is easier to attack than defend. Brazil will have numerous chances, which they will miss or will be stopped by Oliver Kahn. Germany on the other hand will capitalize on their opportunities and win their fourth world cup crown.
For a team that was generally described in many negative ways, such as: The German defense looked mortal - are not the favorites - Unashamed Germans survive again - without producing exciting football - tournament without any feelings of embarrassment on Tuesday - But they struggled - suffering an embarrassing 1-0 defeat - German defense broke apart - Germany's defense has been shaky - Brazil and Germany came to the World Cup finals, supposedly with their weakest teams in years - the laughingstock of Europe - Germany won't be very creative - Germans admitted to being outplayed by the feisty Americans - the sight of a limited German - German dailies applaud success - grinding and unspectacular workmanlike performance as a tribute to German virtues - considered duds, losers, scaredy-cats, and stumblers... And rarely with little acknowledgment and recognition, and with very few exceptions like: Germany, a three-time champion, has played in some memorable and spectacular World Cup semifinals that remain the highlights of soccer's premier event - It is worth noting that, even when fielding a comparatively weak team, Germany still manages to enjoy success... Or reluctant acknowledgment: the Germans are beginning to show some style as well, even if they are not dazzling yet... They haven't done badly so far, have they?
But begrudgingly state: Guus Hiddink became the latest in a long, long line of defeated World Cup coaches forced to acknowledge the winning mentality of Germany.
