Univision tops '98 Cup final rating

Posted: Wednesday July 03, 2002 2:52 PM

NEW YORK (AP) -- Spanish-language Univision drew 8 percent more households for this year's World Cup final than for the 1998 championship.

Despite the early start, an average of 1.86 million Spanish-speaking households tuned in last Sunday for Brazil's 2-0 victory over Germany, which started at 7 a.m. EDT.

In 1998, an average of 1.72 million Spanish-speaking households watched France's 3-0 victory over Brazil, which began at 3 p.m. EDT.

ABC's English-language coverage of the game in Yokohama, Japan, got a 3.9 overnight rating from 53 major markets, which would translate to 4.11 million households if its remains the same for national ratings, which will be released Monday. However, the national rating for soccer games usually is lower than the overnight rating.

Overall, Univision averaged 987,000 Spanish-speaking households for its 56 live World Cup telecasts, up 16 percent from an average of 850,000 homes in 1998. Its largest audience, 2.2 million Spanish-speaking households for the United States' 2-0 upset of Mexico in the second round, outdrew ESPN's coverage, which had an average of 1.98 million households tuned in.

For its first seven World Cup telecasts this year -- all on tape delay -- ABC averaged 1.27 million households. ESPN averaged 963,000 households for 24 live telecasts and ESPN2 averaged 490,000 homes for 34 live telecasts.

Because of the 13-hour time difference from the East Coast of the United States to Japan and South Korea, World Cup games this year started at 1:30 a.m., 2:30 a.m., 3:30 a.m., 5 a.m., 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. EDT.

In 1998, games started at 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. EDT.

The 2006 tournament is to be played in Germany, where games will start in the morning and afternoon for U.S. television.
