SUWON, South Korea (Ticker) -- Senegal looks to continue its Cinderella ride Tuesday, when its faces Uruguay in their final Group A match. Senegal's storybook World Cup began when it shocked defending champion France, 1-0. Then, the Lions of Terenaga followed that up with a 1-1 draw against Denmark. The African nation comes into the Uruguay match looking to advance to the second round in its first World Cup appearance. Senegal will be without the services of Liverpool-bound midfielder Salif Diao, who is suspended for the Group A showdown. Coach Bruno Metsu will use either Henri Camara or Souleyman Camara to replace Diao. Metsu is hoping defender Aliou Cisse and midfielder Khalilou Fadiga recover from injury. Cisse was sidelined for the Denmark game with a calf injury and Fadiga is hobbled by a thigh strain. Uruguay's defense, which looked out of sync in the 2-1 defeat to Denmark, settled down to play to a scoreless tie against France. Metsu is aware that Uruguay, which needs to win by two clear goals to edge Senegal for a place in the second round, may resort to underhanded tactics to get under his team's skin. "They tried to trap the French players into making them lose their self-control," Metsu said. " he said. "I'm aware of that and I hope my players won't fall into that kind of trap." Uruguay goalkeeper Fabian Carini has kept his team in both games and will have to get some offensive production for any chance of advancing. More is expected from Cruz Azul striker Sebastian Abreu and Dario Silva. As anticipated, Alvaro Recoba has starred for Uruguay, but he has seen little support from teammates. Senegal's stingy defense has surprised the group. Led by goalkeeper Tony Sylva, it has yielded just one goal in two games. El Hadji Diouf, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, has been a consistent thorn in opponents' sides and Pape Bouba Diop is having a good tournament, as well. These two nations will face each other for the first time. |
