SEOGWIPO, South Korea (Ticker) -- Paraguay still is alive in Group B, but must beat Slovenia by at least two goals on Wednesday, when the teams square off. Paraguay also needs a little help. Spain also must beat South Africa in Wednesday's other Group B encounter. The Paraguayan defense has not been the steady one of four years ago. Against South Africa, it wasted a two-goal lead, while Spain put three goals past outspoken goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert. A free-kick specialist, Chilavert had promised to keep a clean sheet and score twice against the Spaniards. Roque Santa Cruz already has displayed many of his skills for German power Bayern Munich. Santa Cruz, 20, was Paraguay's best player against Spain. Paraguay's coach Cesare Maldini, who led Italy to the 1998 World Cup quarterfinals, may give speedy winger Jorge Campos a chance to ignite the offense and provide additional pressure on Slovenia goalkeeper Marco Simeunovic. Slovenia already is eliminated and will be playing for pride. Playing in the tournament for the first time, Slovenia still is looking for its first World Cup victory. |
