DAEJEON, South Korea (Ticker) -- Spain swept Group B in style and, in turn, pushed South Africa out of the World Cup. Raul scored twice as Spain defeated South Africa, 3-2, and set up a second-round matchup against Ireland on Sunday. "Ireland did not lose any games," Spain coach Jose Antonio Camacho said. "They are a very compact team and we know it will be difficult. We now have more time to rest. From now on, it will be sudden death. Spain will play to win. "I think the knockout phase will be open with a lot of goals and we will do our best." Meanwhile, the South Africans tallied five goals in their three Group B matches. But Bafana Bafana was eliminated by virtue of scoring one fewer goal than Paraguay, which posted a 3-1 triumph over Slovenia. Though this was not the most convincing of victories, Spain is the only team to earn maximum points in group play so far, scoring three goals in each of its three victories. Raul's second goal -- the 28th for his country -- proved to be the game-winner. A key moment came when an error by goalkeeper Andre Arendse, who failed to control a rather easy back pass, led to the Real Madrid striker walking up and slotting in the opener. Gaizka Mendieta scored the other Spanish goal, curling a free kick around the wall in the waning moments of the first half. South Africa's Benni McCarthy scored from close range after 31 minutes and captain Lucas Radebe put home a header off a corner kick in the 53rd as Bafana Bafana battled back twice to knot the contest. The African nation showed Spain to be vulnerable at its own end, where the Europeans failed to clear the balls that led to South Africa's goals. Defender Radebe, however, was unable to stay with Raul, whose 56th-minute header clinched the win. "I thought we did well throughout the tournament, we showed a lot of guts and spirit," said South African coach Jomo Sono, who at press time was being taken to a hospital after reportedly falling ill in the dressing room. "We gave up three silly goals. So, we were punished. It's unfortunate for us that Paraguay had to win so well, but it happens and that is the name of the game. Id like to say to our country that we really gave our best shot. Were sorry and thats it." South Africa leaves Asia with its head held high after recording a first World Cup victory and performing well against more experienced sides, Spain and Paraguay. "We play attacking football," South Africa midfielder Quinton Fortune said. "It's the World Cup. We weren't going to sit back and play defensive football." |
