Venue information

About a one-hour drive northeast of Tokyo, located in a thriving industrial area 3 kilometers (2 miles) from the center of Kashima City developing as a scientific center, Kashima Soccer Stadium is the closest venue to Narita International Airport. The stadium, Japan's first to be built exclusively for soccer, was renovated in May 2001 to expand seating capacity.

Kashima stadium is home to the J-League club Kashima Antlers, where former Brazilian international Zico spent 1992-1994 before retiring from professional soccer. A bronze statue of Zico stands outside as a tribute to the star midfielder, who is the Antlers' technical director.
