MARSEILLE, France (AP) --
The Netherlands
powered to the top of its World Cup group with a one-sided 5-0 beating of
South
Korea Saturday to put the Koreans out of the championship.
Phillip Cocu and Mark Overmars fired the Netherlands into a 2-0 halftime
lead before Dennis Bergkamp, Pierre van Hooydonk and Ronald de Boer added
three more in the last 18 minutes as Guus Hiddink's team posted the biggest
score of this World Cup.
Now the Dutch need only a tie with Mexico on
Thursday to gain a place in the last 16 while the Koreans, who co-host the
2002 World Cup with Japan, became the
second team to go out along with Saudi
Arabia. They still haven't won a game in five appearances.
Bergkamp, starting a game for the first time since mid-April, set up a
chance for the Dutch with a dazzling run past two Korean defenders on the
right in the 16th minute. The Arsenal star pulled the ball back to Wim
Jonk, whose first time shot was brilliantly palmed away by goalkeeper Kim.
Bergkamp was creating plenty of danger and lobbed a shot just too high in
the 22nd minute after exchanging passes with Cocu. With the Dutch in
command, Edgar Davids then had a 25-yard shot tipped over the top by Kim.
Korea's Choi Yong-soo was shown the yellow card for taking too long to take
a 40-yard free kick in the 27th minute and the long-range shot slid
harmlessly wide.
Davids rescued the Dutch defense when Seo Jung-wan neatly turned Aron
Winter on the halfway line and raced for goal. The Juventus midfielder
dashed back to tackle the Korean forward before he could shoot.
A minute later the Dutch went ahead.
Bergkamp slipped a short pass to Cocu just outside the Korean area and
looked for the return pass. With the defense watching Bergkamp's run, Cocu
moved into space on the edge of the box and fired a low, left-fooed shot
past Kim from 20 yards.
Five minutes later it was 2-0 when the Dutch broke out of their own area to
add the second.
Bergkamp ran from deep and lost possession only for Wim Jonk to win the
ball back. The Dutch had a three vs. two advantage as they broke over the
halfway line and Jonk fed Overmars on the left.
The Arsenal winger beat defender Choi Sung-jong and fired a low, right
footed shot home from 15 yards.
Bergkamp should have added a third six minutes into the second half when a
smart Dutch move left him with only the Korean goalkeeper to beat. Kim
raced almost to the edge of his area to block his first shot and the Dutch
forward lobbed his second over the top with the goalkeeper still well off
his line.
Kim made another good save three minutes later to keep out an 18-yard shot
from Davids after the Dutch again carved open the Korean defense.
But the Koreans almost pulled a goal back in the 59th minute when Choi
Yong-soo wrestled his way past Frank de Boer but his close range attempt
was blocked by goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar.
The Dutch needed a third goal to go top of the group and fired shot after
shot at the Korean goal.
Cocu and Ronald de Boer both shot wide and Bergkamp drove the ball straight
at the goalkeeper before the goal finally came with 18 minutes remaining.
After Seo had shots wide for the Koreans, Winter pushed a pass through to
Bergkamp just outside the area. He shrugged off a challenge from Lee
Min-sung and turned past Kim Tae-young before shooting past the goalkeeper
with the outside of his right foot.
Bergkamp went off in the 78th minute and Van Hooydonk netted the fourth
within 60 seconds of replacing him. Overmars crossed from the left and the
tall striker ws unchallenged as he ran in to head home from close range.
The fifth arrived in the 83rd minute when Jonk ended a five-man move with a
pass to Ronald de Boer, who side-stepped a defender before firing home from
16 meters.
