MANAMA, Bahrain (CNN/SI) -- Needing a new coach to lead its national team, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation turned to former coach Otto Pfister of Germany.

An official of Saudi Football Federation said Tuesday that Pfister had been appointed to replace Carlos Alberto Parriera of Brazil, who was sacked after the Saudis' poor performance in the World Cup. The team was eliminated after Denmark beat it 1-0 and France 4-0 in the first round.

Pfister, 51, who took Saudi Arabia to the second round in the 1994 World Cup, is currently training the Saudi under-16 team in Slovakia for next week's World Youth Games in Moscow, the Saudi official said on condition of anonymity.

Starting in mid-August, Pfister will train the Saudi national squad for the Arab Cup in September in Doha, Qatar, the official said. He will continue to serve as coach for the under-16 team.

The official declined to say how much Pfister will be paid.

The Saudi national team has gone through eight coaches in three years.
