Striking while hot Kluivert on brink of signing with Manchester UnitedPosted: Saturday August 01, 1998 08:01 AM
MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Dutch World Cup striker Patrick Kluivert is reportedly on the brink of signing with Premier League soccer giant Manchester United. Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards confirmed Thursday that AC Milan had accepted an offer, worth a reported 9 million pounds (US$14.8 million), for the 22-year-old forward. Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is desperate to lure a top striker before the start of the season and Kluivert, who is expected to complete the deal after thrashing out personal terms on his return from holiday, is a near certainty. Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani confirmed his club had received and accepted United's offer for Kluivert, the Daily Mail said. "We're happy with their bid," Galliani was quoted as saying. Kluivert started the World Cup with a red card against Belgium before scoring goals against Argentina and Brazil in the Netherlands' remaining matches. Edwards said the signing of Kluivert did not mean Manchester United would give up on trying to lure Dwight Yorke from Aston Villa. Aston Villa, which values Yorke at 16 million pounds (US$26.3 million), has already rejected Manchester United's 8 million pound (US$13.15 million) offer for the Trinidad and Tobago striker.
