English F.A.: Stay out of Super League English clubs joining proposed league face stiff penaltiesPosted: Sunday August 02, 1998 03:41 PM
LONDON (Reuters) -- England's top clubs have been warned they face being kicked out of the premier league and the F.A. Cup if they join a proposed European Super League. F.A. chairman Keith Wiseman told Sunday's News of the World, "Any club which plays unsanctioned football would render itself liable from FIFA downwards to be banned from sanctioned football. It is as wide as that." Wiseman also spelt out the implications of a breakaway league for England players at rebel clubs. "The postion is clear," he said. "Anyone who plays outside the jurisdiction of the football bodies renders themselves liable to be excluded from any competition within these boundaries." FIFA has jurisdiction over everything -- and that includes international football. The implications are considerable. The Premier League has already asked its leading clubs to give assurances that they do not intend to join a Super League. Champions Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool are the clubs likely to be approached by any new European league. United has denied any involvement. Leading Spanish and Italian clubs are believed to be at the center of the breakaway talks but none has confirmed it has been involved in discussions.
