MIDDLESBROUGH, England (AP) -- Northern Ireland international Keith Gillespie's proposed 3.5 million pound ($5.75 million) transfer from Newscastle to Middlesbrough fell through Monday when he failed a medical.

Gillespie had agreed to terms for a five-year deal with 'Boro but the club withdrew its offer due to concerns over an ankle injury the player sustained before last season's FA Cup final.

The 23-year-old had planned to partner with ex-England international Paul Gascoigne in midfield for Middlesbrough but will now stay with Newcastle.

Newcastle criticized Middlesbrough's handling of the proposed transfer after news of the deal was released before Newcastle boss Kenny Dalglish had been notified or Gillespie had undertaken the medical.
