LONDON (Reuters) -- England midfielder David Beckham has signed a five-year contract with Manchester United worth about 5.0 million pounds ($8.11 million), English newspapers reported on Saturday.

Beckham joins other home grown stars like Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes in signing long-term contracts to stay at the English Premier League side.

"I am delighted to commit myself on a long-term contract. This is the club where I have grown up and it's where I want to stay," the 23-year-old Beckham said.

Beckham, the golden boy of English soccer before this year's World Cup, crashed to infamy when he was sent off in a crucial second-round match against Argentina and was blamed for England's loss and exit from the competition.

The English premier league season kicks off later on Saturday.
