Now that's sexy! Newcastle routs Coventry 5-1 playing Gullit's stylePosted: Saturday September 19, 1998 01:17 PM
LONDON (AP) -- Newcastle fans have been talking about "sexy football" since Ruud Gullit was named in a surprise last month as the new coach. Well, they got it Saturday. With Alan Shearer scoring twice to give the England international five goals in his last three games, Newcastle dismantled Coventry 5-1 to move into the chase in England's Premier League. Almost lost in the shadow was Derby's convincing 2-0 home victory over Leicester, moving Derby into second place with 12 points behind league-leading Aston Villa's 14. Villa had to settle for a 0-0 draw at Leeds as neither team showed the kind of firepower they'll need to make them convincing challengers when the league ends in eight months. Liverpool slipped from second to third place with 11 points after a disappointing 3-3 home draw against newly promoted Charlton. On the brighter side, Robbie Fowler did score twice in his return to the starting lineup following injury. Wimbledon also moved up to 11 points with a 2-1 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday, the 'Dons best start in six seasons. At the bottom of the standings there was also good news for Southampton, which picked up it first point of the season with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham. Spurs started Hans Segers in goal. The Dutch goalkeeper -- who made his name in England playing with Wimbledon -- was cleared of match-fixing charges last year by an English court in a case that also involved former Liverpool and Southampton goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar. In other Premier League games Saturday: Middlesbrough 2, Everton 2; Nottingham Forest 0, West Ham 0. On Sunday, Manchester United plays at Arsenal in a clash between two of England's biggest clubs. On Monday, the Premier League completes its round with Chelsea at Blackburn. In England's first division, Huddersfield won its fifth straight game -- 2-1 over Wolverhampton -- to take sole possession of first place with 19 points. Sunderland lashed Oxford United 7-0 and moved into second with 18, followed by Birmingmam City and Bury with 16 apiece.
