Bayern says Bundesliga may have to be reduced

MUNICH, Germany (AP) -- More games in the Champions League should lead to a reduction in the Bundesliga from 18 to 16 clubs, a Bayern Munich official said Wednesday.

Fritz Scherer, vice-president of the Bundesliga powerhouse, said the domestic league could not escape unscathed from the expanded Champions League schedule.

"It would be useful to cut the number of clubs to 16," Scherer said.

The Champions League will be extended next season to 32 teams, eight more than now.

Scherer said UEFA's plans to restructure the European club competitions fell short in one aspect -- marketing of the television rights.

Bayern Munich wants every club to be able to negotiate its own broadcasting deal, rather than having UEFA conclude a package contract, Scherer said.
