Ronaldo scores winner in return Man U, Real Madrid crush foes in Champions LeaguePosted: Wednesday October 21, 1998 06:06 PM
LONDON (AP) -- Ronaldo returned to fire Inter Milan to victory while defending titlist Real Madrid and Manchester United each scored six goals in the Champions League Wednesday. Out for a month with tendinitis in both knees, Ronaldo gathered the ball after it was fumbled by Moscow Spartak goalkeeper Alexander Filimonov and slotted it home to give Inter a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute at the San Siro Stadium. It proved vital as Inter held on for 2-1 to end Spartak's perfect start and rekindled the Italian team's title hopes. After its 6-1 crushing of last place Sturm Graz, Real moved to the top of Group C ahead of Spartak and Inter with all three teams having six points. Two goals each for Brazilian Savio and Croat Robert Jarni powered last year's titlist to a one-sided win after the Austrians had gone ahead. Manchester United romped to the top of Group D with a 6-2 crushing of Brondby in Copenhagen to muscle its way back into contention for the title it last won in 1968. After drawing its earlier games against Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Alex Ferguson's team tore the Brondby defense apart with two strikes by Ryan Giggs and more from Andy Cole, Roy Keane, Dwight Yorke and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. A goal just before halftime by Stefan Effenberg gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 victory over Barcelona. But the Spanish team is second on a better goal differential with both teams having four points. Brondby is fourth with three points but all four teams remain in contention. Sigurd Rushfeldt scored all goals as Rosenborg beat surprise Group B leader Galatasaray 3-0 to jump to the top from third place. Juventus managed only a 0-0 draw with Athletic de Bilbao and dropped to third with three points. A diving header from Dennis Bergkamp appeared to put Arsenal into a 2-point lead atop Group E before Sergei Rebrof scored a last minut equalizer for Dynamo Kiev at Wembley. Substitute Wagneau Eloi snatched an 80th minute winner to give Lens a 1-0 victory over Panathinaikos and Arsenal is ahead of the French club only because it has scored more goals. Both have five points with Panathinaikos third with three and Kiev at two. A hotly-disputed 80th-minute winner from Juergen Rische gave FC Kaiserslautern a 2-1 victory at PSV Eindhoven to stretch the German team's advantage to three points atop Group F. Rische's header was judged to have crossed the line before it was saved by PSV keeper Ronald Waterreus, but the referee gave the goal only after consulting with his assistant. A first-half penalty goal from Mika Lehkosuo and a headed goal by Mika Kottila in the second half gave HJK Helsinki a 2-0 victory over Benfica and the Finnish team jumped ito second place with four points with Eindhoven and Benfica both at three. Olympiakos edged four-time titlist Ajax Amsterdam 1-0 to move three points clear in Group A, the only goal coming from Alexios Alexandris three minutes before half time. FC Porto downed Croatia 3-0 with two strikes by Slovenia's Zlatko Zahovic and one by Brazil's Doriva to move up to second ahead of Ajax on goal difference with both tied on four points.
