Luton ousts Coventry from FA Cup Division Two club piles hurt on Premier League foePosted: Wednesday October 28, 1998 10:31 AM
LONDON (AP) -- Division Two Luton ousted Premier League club Coventry City from the League Cup on a 2-0 upset scoreline Tuesday while division three Cambridge United produced a comeback from 3-0 down at Nottingham Forest before losing in a penalty shootout. With England striker Dion Dublin talking over a 6 million pound ($10 million) transfer to Blackburn, struggling Coventry tumbled at Kenilworth Road without him. Phil Gray fired Luton ahead early in the second half and it was 2-0 when Graham Alexander's corner was headed home by Steve Davies. Luton had knocked out division one Oxford and Ipswich on the way to the third round and the result poured more misery on Coventry which is second from last in the Premier League standings. At the City Ground, goals by Dougie Freedman, Craig Armstrong and Marlon Harewood put Forest 3-0 ahead a minute into the second half. Trevor Benjami and Martin Butler pulled it back to 3-2 and John Taylor's penalty six minutes from the end after French defender Thierry Bonolaire had handled, meant Cambridge took the match to extra time in front of Forest's horrified fans. The Premier League team, down to 10 players after Bonolaire's expulsion, held on to take the match to penalties and advanced 4-3 in the shootout. In other third round matches, Liverpool downed Kevin Keegan's Fulham 3-1 and Tottenham gained a 3-1 win at another division two club, Northampton. Fulham held Liverpool scoreless at half time but fell behind to a deflected David Thompson shot. Paul Peschisolido's curling shot past Liverpool's United Sttes international goalkeeper Brad Friedel made it 1-1 but Robbie Fowler fired in a penalty after Michael Owen had been brought down and Paul Ince headed home Steve Staunton's cross. Tottenham fell a goal down at division two Northampton through Sean Parrish. But Chris Armstrong hit two goals and Sol Campbell added another and Spurs' French international star David Ginola even had a penalty saved. Two goals by Tony Cottee fired visiting Leicester into the last 16 in a 2-1 win at harlton who replied through Paul Mortimer. Paul Dalglish, son of former Newcastle manager Kenny, fired the only goal as Newcastle won 1-0 at division one Tranmere.
