Simeone comes to Inter's rescue Late goal secures draw; Spartak, Inter remain atop groupPosted: Wednesday November 04, 1998 06:57 PM
MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- Inter Milan's Diego Simeone scored on a free kick in the 89th minute to draw with Spartak Moscow 1-1 in a Group C Champions League fourth-rotation match on Wednesday. Before a record crowd of 83,000 at Luzhniki Stadium, Spartak took a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute on a shot from 10 yards by Andrei Tikhonov that went in off the post and got behind Inter goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca. Ronaldo, who had played in only two matches this season as he nurses tendinitis in both knees, started but was substituted for in the 66th minute. Both clubs have seven points in four games to lead the group, pending Sturm Graz-Real Madrid's game on Thursday. That match was rained out Wednesday. Real Madrid has six points and the Austrians have lost all three. "This game gave us a chance to hope for better future," said Inter coach Luigi Simoni, whose job is on the line after a poor start. "Spartak showed a perfect game, but Inter found a chance to tie."
