Chelsea, Mallorca, Lazio move on in Cup Winners Posted: Thursday November 05, 1998 07:24 PM
LONDON, England (AP) -- If Brian Laudrup's story with Chelsea ended Thursday, it was a memorable finish. Laudrup, expected to sign as early as Friday with FC Copenhagen, got the deciding goal to move Chelsea to the quarterfinals of the Cup Winners Cup - ousting what is almost sure to be his new team. Laudrup, a former Danish international, scored on a header in the 32nd off a perfect cross from Graeme LeSaux to give Chelsea - the holders - a 1-0 lead to advance 2-1. The clubs drew 1-1 two weeks ago in London. LeSaux's cross was headed off the crossbar by teammate Pierluigi Casiraghi, but it bounded out to Laudrup who headed it home to draw applause at Parken Stadium. Dan Petrescu substituted for Laudrup in the 66th. The 29-year-old Laudrup said last week he wanted to return to his native Denmark. Copenhagen officials hoped to announce Laudrup's signing after this match, although Laudrup said he planned to return to London for a Sunday league game. In other Cup Winners Cup matches, the clubs reaching the quarterfinals in March were: Valerenga of Norway, Croatia's Varteks, Greek club Panionios, Israel's Maccabi Haifa, Lokomotiv Moscow, Mallorca of Spain and Lazio. In Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Marcelo Salas scored twice as Lazio Rome beat Partizan Belgrade 3-2 to advance after a scoreless first leg. Mladen Krstajic gave Partizan a 1-0 lead in the 18th, but Lazio tied on Salas' penatly kick in the 44th. Yugoslav midfielder Dejan Stankovic, a second-half substitute, gave Lazio a 2-1 lead in the 67th and Salas made it 3-1 in the 76th. Ivica Iliev got Partizan's final goal. In Varazdin, Croatia, Miljenko Mumlek scored the decider a minute from the end of extra timeto give Varteks a 4-2 win over SC Heerenveen, advancing 5-4. Tied 1-1, Faik Karamberovic gave Varteks a 2-1 lead in the 80th. That put the clubs even on total goals - and away goals - and forced extra time. Karamberovic scored what appeared to be the winning goal in the 117th. But Jan de Visser momentarily dashed Varteks' hopes with a goal a minute later - which would have advanced the Dutch on the away-goal rule - setting the stage for Mumlek's decider in the 119th. In Haifa, Israel, Maccabi Haifa became the first Israeli team to reach the quarterfinals of a European competition, beating SV Ried of Austria 4-1 to move on 5-3. The goalscorers for Maccabi Haifa were Alon Mizrahi, Adoram Keisi, Yossi Benayun, and Ibrahim Duro. Austria's scorer was Michael Anicic in the 69th minute. Ofir Koppel of Haifa was ejected in the 8th minute on his second yellow card, but two minutes later the sides were even as Ried's Gunter Steininger got a red card. Ried substitute Faruk Hljtruvic was ejected in the 90th minute for striking a ball boy in the chest as he took the ball from him. In Istanbul, Turkey, Norway's Valerenga rallied for three second-half goals and drew with Turkey's Besiktas 3-3 to advance 4-3. Besiktas, trailing 1-0 after first leg, went ahead 3-0 on two goals by Oktay Derelioglu and Tayfur Havutc. But the Norwegians evened with three second-half goals to qualify - Knut Henry Harladsen (63rd), Kjell Roar Kaasa (67th) and the decider from John Carew (74th). In Braga, Porgual, Braga defeated Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0, but the Russians advanced 3-2. Braga scored in the 11th on a powerful shot from Croatian Karoglan Mladen that bounced off Lokomotiv keeper Ruslan Nigmatullin's chest and into the net. In Limassol, Cyprus, Antonis Sapountzis scored in the 18th mintue as Greek side Panionios defeated Apollon to advance on a 4-2 aggregate. In Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Real Mallorca and Racing Genk played a scoreless draw, with the Spaniards advancing on the away-goal rule after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
