TENERIFE, Spain (Reuters) -- Tenerife goalkeeper Carlos Navarro Montoya has gone on strike.

Navarro Montoya, who joined Tenerife from relegated Merida during the summer, was demoted to the substitutes' bench recently by Tenerife coach Juanma Lillo but said he preferred to sit in the stands.

"I've spoken with the coach and told him I think I'm the best," an unrepentent Navarro Montoya said on Thursday.

Navarro Montoya won international honors with Colombia, the country of his birth, but is best known for battling soccer's world governing body FIFA for the right to represent Argentina, the nationality of his parents and where he made his name playing for Boca Juniors.
