French World Cup striker joins Glasgow Rangers Posted: Friday November 06, 1998 03:11 PM
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -- French World Cup striker Stephane Guivarc'h ended his brief stint with Newcastle on Friday by signing a 3.5 million-pound (US$5.8 million) deal with Scottish soccer giants, Glasgow Rangers. Guivarc'h joined Newcastle in June for 3.5 million pounds and was a member of the French squad which won the France '98 World Cup in July. He scored on his debut for Newcastle but had limited opportunites after Kenny Dalglish was fired as Newcastle manager and replaced by Dutchman Ruud Gullit. "I was not part of Ruud Gullit's plans and knew I had to move on," Guivarc'h said Friday. Guivarc'h, who rejected an approach from Rangers in May, has been included in the Rangers squad for Sunday's Scottish Premier League match against St. Johnstone. He completed a medical at Ibrox and trained with his new team Friday before confirming the three-year deal. The 28-year-old striker was the leading goal scorer in the French league in 1997 and 1998 but his World Cup ambitions were curtailed when he was injured in France's opening pool match against South Africa.
