Juventus denies extension of Zidane's contract Posted: Friday November 06, 1998 01:25 PM
TURIN, Italy (AP) -- Juventus officials on Friday denied that the Turin club has extended the contract of French midfielder Zinedine Zidane through 2005. Meanwhile, Turin's daily La Stampa suggested that the French international may be willing to leave La Juve before his current contract ends in 2003. La Stampa, which is controlled by the Agnelli family which indirectly owns the Turin club, wrote that Zidane was unhappy with the better contract and attention given to the other team star, Italy's Alessandro Del Piero. "Zidane is aware that he would be the undisputed No.1 player in any other big club ... and is suffering the leadership of Del Piero," La Stampa wrote Friday. Zidane, who led France to the world title last summer, has been a key to Juventus' most recent triumphs in the Italian league. He's a top candidate for the 1998 award of best player of the year.
