Report: Platt to coach Sampdoria Posted: Tuesday December 15, 1998 11:54 AM
GENOA, Italy (AP) -- Former England captain David Platt has been chosen to take over as coach of Italian League club Sampdoria of Genoa, media reports said Tuesday. Platt, who helped Sampdoria win an Italian Cup during his playing days, will join the team next week, the ANSA news agency and Corriere dello Sport newspaper reported. ANSA said details of a contract will be worked out later this week when Platt returns from Hong Kong, where he is with England's Under-16 side. At 32, he would be the youngest coach in Serie A. Platt retired as a player over the summer, following a 14-year career in which he played for Serie A sides Sampdoria, Bari and Juventus, plus English clubs Crewe, Aston Villa and Arsenal. He scored 209 goals in 500 matches. Sampdoria (3-4-6) fired first-year coach Luciano Spalletti following a 5-2 loss at Lazio of Rome on Sunday. The defeat dropped the club into 14th place in the 18-team league, just one point out of the relegation zone.
