LONDON (Reuters) -- Former England manager Terry Venables stepped down Friday as coach of first-division Crystal Palace, BBC Radio said.

The radio said Venables had quit as coach and would be employed by Palace as a part-time consultant.

Former team manager Steve Coppell will take charge temporarily.

After lengthy talks with Crystal Palace chairman Mark Goldberg, Venables said, "It became clear that it may even be beneficial to Crystal Palace for us to part company."

"However, I have decided to give as much help and assistance as I can," said Venables, reported to have been frustrated at financial restraints placed on him.

Venables -- former manager of England, Australia and Spain's Barcelona -- said he had remained on good terms with Goldberg. He took up the position with the London club just five months ago.
