CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) -- Soccer's European governing body, UEFA, is ready to start experimenting with two referees on the field.

Meeting in Cape Town, its executive board approved a proposal by the UEFA Referees' Committee which is to be put to soccer's International Board next month.

"The International Board is due to meet in Wales in late February and, if approval is given, experiments in Europe could begin almost immediately," UEFA said in a statement.

'Without going into technical details, the move is in accordance with UEFA's philosophy of trying to optimize the use of human resources before even considering the use introduction of technology."
