LONDON (AP) -- A day after his brilliant performance steered Manchester United to a 2-0 Champions Cup win over Inter Milan, David Beckham became a father as pop star "Posh Spice" Victoria Adams gave birth to a boy.

Brooklyn Joseph Beckham was born Thursday evening at a central London hospital weighing 7 lbs. (3.18 kilos).

"Victoria is very well," the Manchester United star said. "She is sitting up drinking champagne and has spoken to the other girls.

"The birth was natural and there were no complications, nothing at all. This just tops everything," he said. "I think you can't compare it to anything else."

Around 24 hours before the baby was born, Beckham was in standout form for the Reds at Old Trafford, supplying two precision crosses for striker Dwight Yorke to head the goals against Inter Milan.

There was even more satisfaction for Beckham in the game because he was playing against Diego Simeone, the Argentine midfielder whose play-acting got the English star sent off in last summer's World Cup.

Simeone flattened Beckham who retaliated with a kick back at the Argentine player and Simeone had admitted he deliberately fell to the ground with the referee only a few yards away.

Beckham was shown the red card and England had to play the remaining 70 minutes with 10 players. The game ended 2-2 but Argentina won in a penalty shootout and Beckham has continuously been jeered by rival fans who blame him for England's elimination.

Bookmakers William Hill has offered odds of 10,000-1 that Brooklyn will emulate his father and get sent off playing for England against Argentina in the World Cup. The baby is a 1,000-1 shot to play for England and 50-1 lead a pop group known as the Spice Boys.

According to a spokeswoman for the Spice Girls band, the couple decided on Brooklyn as a name for the boy because they were staying at the Four Seasons hotel in the New York district when they discovered Posh Spice was pregnant.
