Peace by police No real fan trouble at Champions Cup clashPosted: Thursday March 18, 1999 03:36 PM
MILAN, Italy (AP) -- There was more disorder on the field than in the stands at Wednesday night's Champions Cup game between Internazionale of Milan and Manchester United, as about 1,000 extra police monitored San Siro Stadium. Police officers kept the visiting United supporters, numbering about 8,000, in the stands for 15 minutes after the final whistle, waiting for Italian fans to file out. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, good enough to put the Premier League leaders into the semifinals on a 3-1 aggregate. Rough play throughout led to five yellow cards. Italian and English police had met earlier Wednesday with club representatives to iron out plans for crowd control, and the police presence appeared to have the intended effect before, during and after the game. The only notable exception came Tuesday night, when Milan police arrested three English hooligans and detained seven others, while two United supporters wound up in the hospital. The arrests were for an attack on a taxi driver, a police official said.
