METZ, France (AP) -- Serb striker Vladan Lukic said Monday he was quitting French first division club Metz for three months to protest NATO airstrikes on his country.

Lukic, who has been on Metz's books for two seasons, said he was returning home to be with his family.

Innocent people are being bombed," Lukic told France-2 television.

Metz coach Joel Muller said the club understood Lukic's concerns.

"We've learned to understand his position," he said. "His stance is very laudable."

Lukic arrived from Swiss club FC Sion and has scored four goals this season.

Seven other Serbs play in the French first division.
