Parma rolls past Atletico 3-1 Chiesa scores twice in UEFA Cup first-leg semifinal routPosted: Tuesday April 06, 1999 06:14 PM
MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Two goals from Enrico Chiesa and one from Argentine Hernan Crespo took Italy's Parma to a 3-1 drubbing of Atletico Madrid in their UEFA Cup first-leg semifinal Tuesday. The Spanish team's only goal was scored by Brazilian Juninho from a penalty kick. Chiesa put Parma one goal ahead in the 13th minute with a right-footed chip from outside the area over goalkeeper Francisco Molina's head and into the net. Eight minutes later Juninho equalized with a penalty kick awarded when Jose Mari Romero was brought down in the box by Lilian Thuram. But by the 41st minute Atletico's packed Vicente Calderon stadium in southern Madrid was suffering again, as Chiesa put Parma 2-1 up by kicking home his earlier header that had rebounded off the post. After the break, Crespo made it 3-1 for Parma, knocking in the rebound from a blocked shot at goal by Dino Baggio in the 62nd. Madrid franticly tried to close the gap through the rest of the match, but Parma maintained calm and control. Juninho fluffed the clearest opportunity with a weak penalty kick awarded in the 73rd after Jose Mari was once again brought to the ground in the box.
