Explosive end to season Violence mars action; Reggina, Lecce promotedPosted: Monday June 14, 1999 01:25 PM
ROME (AP) -- An explosive thrown from the stands injured a goalkeeper during a third-division playoff game Sunday, the last day of the Italian soccer season. Marco Borghetto of Lumezzane dropped to the ground after the device landed nearby during the second half of a 2-1 loss to Pistoia. The 28-year-old goalie was taken to the hospital, and his injuries and condition were not immediately clear. Lumezzane said it will protest the game, which determined a spot in Serie B and was played in Cremona, a neutral site. Elsewhere: -Five police officers were injured trying to separate opposing hooligans before a Serie B game in Genoa. -One officer was hurt when scuffles broke out at a train station in Verona between groups of fans en route to different games. -Seventeen hooligans detained after clashing with police before a Serie B game in Ravenna were banned from attending games for a year. On the field, Reggina, never before in Serie A, and Lecce were promoted to the first division with victories Sunday. Verona and Torino already had clinched the other two berths in Serie A. Reggina edged Torino 2-1 in a game the referee ended in the 87th minute because fans stormed the field to celebrate. Reggina, founded in 1914, is the first club from the poor southern region of Calabria to reach Serie A in 16 years.
