ROME (Reuters) -- A television soccer pundit became the first woman in Italy to break into the hyper-macho world of men's soccer Sunday when she was appointed coach of an amateur male squad.

Carolina Morace, well known in Italy for having played as striker in the women's national squad and for commentating on the men's game for Tele MonteCarlo, was named as coach of the amateur Vis Aurelia team.

The news received wide coverage in soccer-mad Italy, but Morace, 35, remained cool over her appointment.

"If I am the first woman, it's not a special case; it's because I've worked hard," she said.
