Unanimous Man United tops first CNN/World Soccer Top 10Posted: Monday August 09, 1999 05:52 PM
English club Manchester United is the number-one team in the world, according to the first-ever CNN/World Soccer Top 10. The unique list of club football teams worldwide, issued each Monday, is determined by voting from CNN Sports and World Soccer magazine correspondents. Man United was the unanimous choice for the top spot on the strength of its historic treble-winning performance last season, when it captured the Champions League title, the Premier League title and the F.A. Cup. Tied for second with South American champ Palmeiras of Brazil is Germany's Bayern Munich, which fell just short of its own triple last season. Bayern captured the Bundesliga title but lost the Champions League final on two extra-time goals. Bayern also lost to Werder Bremen in the German Cup final. Defending Spanish champ Barcelona places fourth, just ahead of Italian title-holder AC Milan. Lazio -- runner-up in Italy and winner of the final Cup Winners Cup -- places sixth, followed by Spanish power Real Madrid. Ranking eighth is UEFA Cup holder Parma of Italy, followed by Boca Juniors -- which rode a 40-game winning streak to the Argentine league double -- and current Brazilian leader Corinthians. Italy leads all nations with three teams among the Top 10, followed by Brazil and Spain with two each. Falling just short of the list were Arsenal of England, Brazil's Cruzeiro and French champion Bordeaux.
