UEFA issues ethics guidelines Posted: Tuesday August 31, 1999 07:33 PM
NYON, Switzerland (AP) -- In a move to avoid the bribes scandal that rocked the International Olympic Committee, soccer's European body UEFA has drafted a set of guidelines on ethical conduct for its own members. UEFA members will not be allowed to accept gifts or services worth more than 300 Swiss francs (US$197) from any third party or accept repeated favors. "This also applies to free of cost invitations issued from parties that have a vested interest in future decisions or elections within the organization," UEFA said in a statement released on Tuesday. The statement said the guidelines are "in order to ensure even greater transparency at UEFA and to help members of UEFA committees not only to play fairly but also to be seen to be playing fairly. "Members should notify the UEFA General Secretary in writing, before they enter office, of any positions that they have held or currently hold in soccer, as well as any professional activity, secondary occupations, business relations and/or connections with companies which could conflict with their UEFA activities." Any members in doubt, the statement said, should consult the UEFA President or General Secretary. UEFA's move comes after the IOC was plunged into turmoil over the bribes for votes scandal arising out of Salt Lake City's bid for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Ten IOC members were either expelled or resigned.
