UEFA Cup roundup Parma survives scare; Ajax rolls; Newcastle ends slidePosted: Thursday September 16, 1999 06:46 PM
LONDON (AP) -- Defending champion Parma had a scare before defeating Kryvbas of Ukraine 3-2 in one of more than three dozen first-round, first-leg UEFA Cup matches Thursday. Meanwhile, former European Champions Cup winner Ajax got an easy 6-1 victory over Dukla Banska of Slovakia. Likewise, Italian power Juventus won 5-2 over Omonia of Cyprus. At Parma, Italy, newly signed striker Marco Di Vaio scored twice in seven minutes and Dino Baggio added another in the second half to give Parma the 3-2 victory. The Italians fought back after striker Oleksandr Palyanytsia gave the visitors a surprise lead in the 5th minute. Kryvbas got its other goal from Roman Monavov in the 74th. At Sofia, Bulgaria, Nolberto Solano and Temuri Ketsbaia scored as Newcastle United defeated CSKA Sofia 2-0, the English side's first victory since April 11. Newcastle has yet to win this season in England's Premier League and is now being managed by Bobby Robson, who replaced Ruud Gullit after the Magpies got off to a disastrous start. At Nicosia, Cyprus, Italian giant Juventus defeated Omonia of Cyprus 5-2 behind two goals from Filippo Inzaghi. Juventus has reached three of the last four Champions Cup finals and won Europe's top prize in '96. At Trondheim, Norway, Werder Bremen of Germany trounced Bodo/Glimt 5-0, all but assuring the Germans a place in the second round. Claudio Pizzaro and Rade Bogdanovic scored twice with the other strike from Juri Maximov. At Amsterdam, Netherlands, '95 Champions Cup winner Ajax seemed sure of making the second round with a 6-1 win over FC Dukla Banska Bystrica of Slovakia. Ajax defender Frank Verlaat headed an embarrassing own goal after a quarter of an hour, but 10 minutes later made good from the penalty spot. Greek striker Nikos Machlas netted twice with Martijn Reuser, Richard Knopper and Wamberto the other scorers. At Kaiserslautern, Germany, French World Cup star Youri Djorkaeff scored a magnificent goal and paced Kaiserslautern to a 3-0 victory over Scotland's Kilmarnock. Harry Koch and Olaf Marschall also scored for the Germans. At Monte Carlo, Monaco, Monaco scored three late goals -- two from Marco Simone and the other from French international David Trezeguet -- in a 3-0 victory over modest Scottish side St\. Johnstone.
