RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- Three thieves robbed former FIFA Player of the Year Romario at gunpoint and stole his car and cellular phone, police said Saturday.

The Flamengo striker was heading for his nightclub, Cafe do Gol, in Rio's upscale Barra da Tijuca district Friday night when another car forced him to pul over, said a police officer who gave his name only as Sgt. Juvenal.

Although the robbers recognized Romario, they took his Mercedes Benz sedan and left him by the roadside unharmed. A passerby and picked up the 1994 World Cup hero and took him to the police station.
