Taking charge Real Madrid, Bordeaux lead in Champions LeaguePosted: Tuesday September 28, 1999 08:38 PM
LONDON (AP) -- Real Madrid and Bordeaux took charge of their Champions League groups on Tuesday with victories, as FC Porto suffered its first loss after two wins. Real Madrid, champions in 1998, defeated Porto 3-1, and Bordeaux slipped by Spartak Moscow 2-1. Two other key matches between group leaders finished in draws as Valencia tied 1-1 at Bayern Munich and Hertha Berlin drew by the same score at AC Milan.
Group EReal Madrid 3, Porto 1 At Madrid, Fernando Morientes scored one goal and assisted on another for Real Madrid. Real Madrid has seven points and Porto six. Olympiakos 3, Molde 1 At Athens, Greece, Olympiakos won 3-1 on two goals from Brazilian Giovanni and one from countryman Luciano. Andreas Lund scored for Molde in the 58th. Olympiakos has four points and Molde has none after three matches.
Group FBayern Munich 1, Valencia 1 At Munich, Lopez Gerard's diving header with 10 minutes to play gave Valencia a draw against last year's runner-up. The two teams remained deadlocked at five points atop the group as Munich again was lucky to salvage a draw in front of 30,000 at Olympiastadion. Brazilian Giovane Elber scored for Bayern. PSV Eindhoven 0, Rangers 1 At Eindhoven, Netherlands, Jorg Albertz got the winner in the 84th as Rangers got their first win in three matches.
Group GBordeaux 2, Spartak Moscow 1 At Bordeaux, France, the French side took charge of the group with seven points. Sylvain Wiltord scored in the ninth and Johan Micoud got the second in the 56th. Sparta Prague 4, Willem II 0 At Prague, Czech Republic, Sparta Prague got its first victory and improved to five points as Jiri Novotny, Martin Prohaszka, Tomas Rosicky and Jiri Jarosik scored in just under 60 minutes.
Group HAC Milan 1, Hertha Berlin 1 At Milan, Italy, the two leaders drew 1-1 to give each side five points. Ali Daei scored for Hertha Berlin in the 69th and Oliver Bierhoff answered in the 74th. Chelsea 1, Galatasaray 0 At London, Chelsea used a one-man advantage and a goal from Dan Petrescu early in the second half. In UEFA Cup play on Tuesday, Montpellier defeated Red Star Belgrade 2-1 and advance 3-2; Germany's Wolfsburg fell 2-1 to Hungary's VSC Debrecen but advanced 3-2; and Steaua Bucharest defeated Linz 3-2, advancing 5-2.
