Group winners advance to the finals. Eight runners-up go into a playoff to determine four more qualifiers. Another runner-up meets an Asian team in the final playoff.

The 10 teams play a qualifying tournament in a league system. The top four teams qualify and the fifth-placed team plays against the winner of the Oceania qualifications. The winner advances to the finals.

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
Oceania/OFC Groups
The winner of group 1 and group 2 will compete in a home and away play-off. The winner of that competes in a home and away play-off against the team finishing fifth in the South American competition. The winner qualifies for the finals.

New Zealand, Tahiti, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Cook Islands
Asia/AFC Groups
The 10 group winners qualify for the Asia Final Round, drawn into two groups of five teams. The two winners qualify for the World Cup finals. The two runners-up go into a playoff, with the winner playing a European team for a spot in the finals.
